A male prison guard from women-only Arohata Prison near Wellington has been charged with the sexual violation of a 12-year-old girl away from the prison.

Shane Allan Sampson, 46, was arrested on Thursday night and was bailed to his Titahi Bay address when he appeared in Porirua District Court yesterday.

It is alleged he indecently assaulted and sexually violated the girl on May 15. He is yet to plead.

Sampson came into contact with female prisoners as part of his work at Arohata Prison, but the Corrections Department said there had been no known complaints made by prisoners against him. He was suspended from working at the prison after his court appearance yesterday.

He had worked for five years at Arohata and was at Rimutaka Prison for a year before that, the department said.

Chief executive Ray Smith said yesterday that he was disappointed to learn a guard had been charged. "The alleged offending does not relate to his employment. However, we took immediate action to suspend the officer."

Sampson is due to reappear in court next month. He declined to comment outside court. Judge Jan Kelly ordered him to not contact the complainant, not to apply for travel documents and to surrender his passport.
