Three separate sexual violation cases have come before the Hamilton District Court – including two in which police say the women were abducted.

Benjamin Nilesh Goundar of Hamilton, an unemployed male, is charged with kidnapping and raping a woman.

Judge David Ruth yesterday remanded him in custody until January 9 to enable Goundar time to fully consult a lawyer about applying for bail.

Goundar's parents were in court, and the judge thanked them for their attendance.

In an unrelated case, Gary John Gray, aged 54, is charged with abducting a woman for sex, injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assault with intent to commit sexual violation, threatening to kill or do grievous bodily harm, and cultivating cannabis.

He was remanded in custody until January 11 for a bail application.

In a third case, Tony Arie Ngatai, aged 46, of Hamilton, was charged with raping a woman he knows.

His lawyer applied for him to be released on bail to the home of another woman, who the lawyer said was Ngatai's partner. Police disputed the woman was his partner.

Judge Ruth said nothing was proved at this stage, but that his primary concern was the safety of the public.

Given that Ngatai had more than 100 previous convictions, the judge said he was not confident Ngatai had "bridged the gap" required to be granted bail.

He remanded Ngatai in custody to reappear in court on January 31.
