A Pierce County man who made headlines around the world last year for watching child pornography in jail while awaiting rape and molestation charges is now the center of a bill in the legislature.

"Every time you copy and distribute child pornography you are re-victimizing the victim"

Marc Gilbert, who has already been convicted on federal child pornography charges, has been allowed to watch the videos he allegedly made of his victims because he was acting as his own attorney, and he said he needed them to prepare his defense.

Pierce County prosecutor Mark Lindquist was ordered to make copies of the tapes to give Gilbert. He told a House Committee Wednesday that's something he doesn't want to do again.

"Every time you copy and distribute child pornography you are re-victimizing the victim," Lindquist told the House Public Safety Committee in Olympia.

House Bill 2177 would prevent the copying of this evidence. It would restrict the viewing to a secure location. The defense and prosecution teams would still have access to it.

Gilbert has been able to watch the tapes, more than 28 hours of them, in jail whenever he wanted as long as a guard was present.

Gilbert's trial starts Thursday.
